Given Margaret Whiting's limitations as a stylist, you certainly wouldn't expect an album of Jerome Kern-penned Broadway standards to rank among her jazziest, most lively LPs, but the great arranger Russ Garcia truly outdoes himself, masterminding a delightfully energetic session that's undeniably appealing. While Garcia and sidemen including altoist Bud Shank contribute much of the album's sense of swing, Whiting proves herself a far more fluid and rhythmic singer than her critics care to admit — her clarion vocals achieve a nice balance between the theatricality of Kern's music and the pizzazz of Garcia's treatments. A pointed reminder that "wholesome" doesn't necessarily equate with "square."
Margaret Whiting Sings the Jerome Kern Song Book
I grew up listening to Jerome Kern's beautiful music, mostly in movies. I searched through most of what you offer at iTunes and found this to be the perfect memory. Beautiful voice, amazing sensitivity and phrasing. A definite jewel!
a while ago, perhaps 15 years past, i attended a local radio station's united cerebral palsy radiothon at a local inn. Ms Whiting participated, although i do not recall her performing. yet her nice delivery on the radio was ever so nice, and i believe i sat next to her for perhaps a brief moment. now to discover her beautiful singing voice! how nice. to give a hint, the other star that day was Ms Sally Star, a local yet wonderfully international legend from the philadelphia area. bless them both!!!!!!! ps a thrill for me was to get lunch for my gal Sal at a local mc donalds.......
