Editors’ Notes

One of soul music’s most singular and quietly influential figures, Jerry Williams is a record industry veteran who made his recording debut in the mid ‘50s and has been producing idiosyncratic soul records under the Swamp Dogg moniker since the late ‘60s. Like Allen Toussaint in New Orleans and George Clinton in Detroit, Williams was a fiercely talented songwriter, musician and producer who, with the help of a tight-knit community of like minded musicians, pioneered a deeply personal brand of soul music that fused the musical traditions of Southern R&B and Gospel with an obstinately independent philosophical outlook. It found its expression in his highly unorthodox songwriting, which often tackled themes such as racism and social and sexual mores in a surprisingly direct and confrontational style. Swamp Dogg’s discography had been out of print for decades when Williams decided to resurrect it on his own SDEG imprint in the late ‘90s. The Excellent Sides of Swamp Dogg series brings the majority of Williams’ discography back into print for the first time. The first volume collects Williams’ first two solo albums, 1970’s Total Destruction To Your Mind and 1971’s Rat On on a single disc.

Customer Reviews

Total Destruction To Everything You Thought Was Good Music

If you just happened upon this album somehow in a random search, just hit the purchase button immediately. This is an unbelievable album, the likes of which you've never really heard before. Swamp Dogg is one on the very, very short list of incredibly under-appreciated musical talents ever. Enjoy and spread the word!

Unknown Legend

Swamp Dogg is best known for his appearance on the list of worst album covers of all time... don't let that fool you. This is seriously good music, although that's not to say there's not a great sense of humor here too. Imagine a weirder, more independent Otis Redding or any other soul great and there is the Dogg. And besides, this is two albums in one, what's not to love?? Buy it now!

Raunchy, satirical, political, and profane, Swamp Dogg is one of the great cult figures of 20th century American music. The creation of Jerry Williams, Jr., an R&B producer and songwriter of the '60s, Swamp Dogg fit no tidy category. In sheer musical terms, Swamp Dogg is pure Southern soul, anchored on tight grooves and accentuated by horns, but the Dogg is as much about message as music. Williams incorporated all the mind-bending psychedelic ideas of '60s counterculture -- drugs, sex, radical politics,...
