Album Review

On this well-intentioned set, Diane Schuur sings 13 standards that she individually dedicated to 12 singers: Billie Holiday (who is saluted with two songs), Helen Morgan, Anita O'Day, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald, Libby Holman, Peggy Lee, Dinah Washington, Ivie Anderson, Nancy Wilson and Mabel Mercer. In most cases, the arrangements for the huge string orchestra (contributed by Billy May, Johnny Mandel, Jeremy Lubbock, Clare Fischer or Alan Broadbent) weigh down the music a bit, and none of Schuur's renditions quite reach the heights of her role models. Still, Diane Schuur's voice is quite attractive, and taken on its own merit, this sincere CD (which has an informative 40-page booklet) is generally enjoyable.

A Beautful Tribute Album

Most people believe that when an artist releases a tribute album the artist should try to sing just like the original. Imitation is indeed the highest form of flattery but so is recording a version of an artist's song all the while making it your own so it can be deemed "original." What Diane did here is pay tribute to the ladies that inspired her to be what she is and at the same time time not outsing or outshine the original. That's why this album and others like it are called "Tribute." The renditions of these chestnuts are carefully presented and the string arrangements are brilliant. This collection is Diane's way of saying "thanks" for the inspiration and on the liner notes credit is given where credit is due. Overall this is one of Diane's finest efforts, a standout track is "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry." Try not to get moved by this one.

For schuur

Wow! This brings back memories from when I first bought this recording on cassette! I wore it out! This was my truly first intro to schuur. In addition my first intro to some of the singers she honored in her tribute! I still love it!

She sings with passion. Her voice brings the emotion out of the song, The Man I Love and Every time we say Goodbye beautifully done!

Diane Schuur, who has sometimes been on the periphery of jazz, balances her importance as a dedicated jazz singer with the inclusion of a large dose of pop tunes in her repertoire. Early in her career she had the tendency to screech in her upper register, but with maturity that flaw has largely disappeared and she has become a very impressive singer. Blinded at birth due to a hospital accident, Schuur (who would later be nicknamed "Deedles") imitated singers as a child. She had her first gig at a...
