An Iconic Late Seventies Live Recording

This is well-recorded live album that captures the strength of Woody Shaw’s accomplishment as a leader and composer. All of the compositions are originals by Shaw or other members of the group. Shaw’s playing is harmonically complicated and engaging and his phrasing is pitch perfect. His lines frequently extend over the bar lines but are organic and always resolve in satisfying ways. Shaw always had a beautiful clear tone that is well recorded here. This is a recording by a working band and that comes through is superior communication and ensemble work. One of the top jazz recordings of its time.
