Album Review

What About Me is Anne Murray's first album, originally released in 1968 on Canada's tiny Arc label. After Murray signed with Capitol in 1969 and began making hits, Pickwick reissued her Arc recordings for the American market. The folk arrangements bring the acoustic guitar to the foreground, and Murray's confident vocals show that she was already fully developed as a singer. "There Goes My Everything" ventures into folk-rock territory, but most of the music, which includes songs by Tom Paxton and Joni Mitchell, is in the tradition of the Canadian folk scene associated with Gordon Lightfoot and Ian & Sylvia. Murray looks even younger in the cover photos than she would have been when this album was made, but her mature performances make her debut nearly as appealing as her better-known major-label recordings.

This is Anne's real debut album and at a good price

Many digital hucksters seem to get a hold of this album, with bad recording quality and try to pass it off as something new. This one is the REAL THING, and is offered at a good price. I've been a fan of Anne's since 1970 and bought this LP in the mid 70's when it was released in the US. I read that the production budget for this album was $3000, back in 1968. With that in mind, it's a noble effort. It's VERY FOLKSY and in it's own way, charming. All of Anne's albums after this were much different, with more polish, benefiting from real production and budget from Capitol Records. There are a couple of songs here that one should not miss, because they sound as good today as 40 (!) years ago. They are: Some Birds, For Baby (written by John Denver, under his real name) and Last Thing on My MInd. Please beware of any of the knockoffs of this album, but THIS ALBUM you can enjoy.

Nova Scotia-born Anne Murray built her musical influences from the pop sounds that her parents listened to (Rosemary Clooney, Perry Como) and the Top 40 sounds that AM New York radio stations piped into Canada (Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Brenda Lee). Originally she intended to work as a physical education instructor, but she continued to pursue an interest in music. After she was turned down for a spot on a national TV show called Singalong Jubilee, she received a call from the show's producer two...
