iTunes Review

Alongside acts like Happy Mondays and the Smiths, Liverpool’s succinctly, yet perfectly named the La’s are amongst the definitive British rock acts of the late ‘80s. At a time when British rock was still reeling from the colossal impact of the punk revolution of the late ‘70s, the La’s emerged with a set of sharply composed, self- confident pop classics on their 1987 debut. The sweetly melodic, Velvet Underground-aping “There She Goes” is in many ways the band’s defining moment, but from the woozy faux-vaudeville of “Freedom Song” to the frantic mod outrage of “I Can’t Sleep,” The La’s is jam packed with carefully crafted radio-ready pop leavened by literate songwriting and an impressively fierce punk bite. One of the few out-and-out masterpieces to emerge from England in the late ‘80s, and an important influence on the subsequent Britpop movement of the early ‘90s The La’s is a perfect wonder.

This album was a blast of fresh air when it arrived in early 1990's. It is full of the most beautiful melodies you can imagine and one's you can't. I once heard it described as having more hooks than a fisherman's hat and that is not a bad description. The real tragedy it that the band broke up a few short years later and never reached their true potential. The La's were very regularly compared to The Beatles and with good reason. Their songs have the same simple, yet fantastic melodies that will stay in your head and herat for a lifetime. "There She Goes" is probably the best know tune on the album but "Looking Galss" is a song that you can lose yourself in, with its building tension all the way trought to the end. Timless melody is one of the best song on the album and has the ability to stay in your head for days. This is definately an album worth owning. 01 Son Of A Gun 02 I Can't Sleep 03 Timeless Melody 04 Liberty Ship 05 There She Goes 06 Doledrum 07 Feelin' 08 Way Out 09 I.O.U. 10 Freedom Song 11 Failure 12 Looking Glass

The La's

10 CDs, a desert island - The La's is my first choice. So sad this is it - when was the last time you bought a music collect and every tune is reason alone to buy it? An essential.

classic brit pop

this album is without a doubt the great undiscover pop masterpiece. without exception the songs roll out brilliant melodies and catchy choruses . maybe "there she goes " is the only song you may have heard but songs like "doledrums" ,"timeless melody " and "son of a gun" deserve a listen . if you like britpop listen to a band oasis wished they were .

When the La's released their debut album in 1990, it made immediate waves in the British pop scene, as well as American college radio. Drawing from the hook-laden, ringing guitars of mid-'60s British pop as well as the post-punk pop of the Smiths, the La's' self-titled first album had a timeless, classic feel. It seemed like effortless music, yet that was not the case. From their inception in 1986, lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Lee Mavers was a perfectionist with a nearly obsessive eye for detail....
