Master Blue!

What a great musician Blue Mitchell really was; and so under the scope he traveled during his time, spite of his massive talents. The clarity of his tone, the height of his expression over the full range of his instrument; and whose unique "double" solos on most of his pieces stands out far ahead as a distinction among the many giant contemporaries of his era, who did not use this technique--Miles, Lee, Freddie, Woody Shaw, Donald Byrd, Art Farmer, to name a few of those of his era.
Somewhere along the line, Blue Mitchell perfected this clever musical formatted manner of expression that you cannot deny the sheer degree of his desire to be different, and get away with it!

Like Cannonball, Blue Mitchell hailed from the State of Florida (Miami) and worked his way up the southeaster coast, through the Jazz Messengers and beyond.

Just listen to these well developed standards and mixed original pieces, and you too will come away feeling happy that you read my lead and enjoys it all, just as much as I did!

The most beautiful sound

Blue Mitchell's sound is so beautiful it gives me chills. To be so young and be so deep as a musician is truelly remarkable. What a tragedy he died so young.

Jazz as Classic-al

Sometimes European history is focused around battles and classical music. The fact is jazz has the principles of being, itself, classical. Horace Silver introduced an album when I was a young teenn, dedicated to his trip to Japan. Thay albunm is Tokyo Blues. On it was a yougn horn man named Blue Mitchell, and the rest is history, once you hear it. For all the horn players Horace mentored, this guy was the best.
Jennie proves what I mean, and Tokyo Blues certifies it.
This is a pure history lesson in one album!

Owner of a direct, lightly swinging, somewhat plain-wrapped tone that fit right in with the Blue Note label's hard bop ethos of the 1960s, Blue Mitchell tends to be overlooked today perhaps because he never really stood out vividly from the crowd, despite his undeniable talent. After learning the trumpet in high school -- where he got his nickname -- he started touring in the early '50s with the R&B bands of Paul Williams, Earl Bostic, and Chuck Willis before returning to Miami and jazz. There, he...
