Album Review

Buy Me, Bring Me, Take Me: Don't Mess My Hair is more than just a best-of sampler of four of the best contemporary folksinger/songwriters. This live album presents a cohesive group as well as soloists performing material that ranges in subject matter from romance to vacation troubles, and in mood from heartbreaking to sidesplitting. It will make you want to hear each of the singers on her own, but it will also make you hope they tour together more often.

All around great album!

This recording is of the first 4 Bitchin Babes show, recorded at The Bottom Line in NYC, 1991. The Babes have appeared in various lineups over the years (although I believe Sally Fingerette is the one constant member), and they're always worth seeing. I was lucky enough to be at this show, and enjoyed every minute of it. The songs included here are all enjoyable. The best known is probably Christine Lavins "Sensitive New Age Guys", but there are many other gems - "Wake Up And Dream" is a lovely song made even lovelier by Megan McDonough's crystal clear voice. Sally Fingerettes "Ladies Lunch" is moving and sad, and "I'm Fine" is a sweet simple ballad that Patty Larkin's warm alto is perfectly suited for. All 4 of these ladies are enormously talented, and this CD is the best of their best. Well worth owning.

Christine Lavin emerged out of the crowded New York City songwriter scene of the '80s with a style that distinguished her from her peers. First, her songs were overwhelmingly concerned with contemporary romantic mores (that scary, uncertain world of "relationships," "commitments," and "biological clocks"). Second, while her takes on this subject could sometimes be sentimental or even maudlin, more often they were humorous. "If You Need Space, Go to Utah" was the first track on her second recording,...
