Album Review

"Is it all f****d up? Or is it all made up that it's f****d?" It's one of the opening lines from "Grape Juice," and in a way sums up the feeling of both band and album title in that they're delivered in a slightly tense style over a brisk but easygoing arrangement that couldn't be any more classic '80s alterna-rock if it tried. Thus These Times Old Times looks back to classic rock of several stripes while still not being something completely rootsy through and through — a good thing, given how much music has happened since. Hints of acts like the dB's, the Feelies, and others from '80s college rock times abound, though if Lonnie Walker's players lack those groups' unique touches, they make the most of their ability around rough-and-ready rave-ups on songs like "Compass Comforts" and "Summertime," the latter featuring another sharp lyric and great overall group performance. Strong points — including the sea shanty-paced "Wider Than White," with Brian Corum's vocals taking on an exaggerated drawl before leading into a more uptempo break with some great guitar work, and the equally slow but forceful swing of "Pendulum's Chest" revving up into a full, exultant conclusion — show that the band knows how to not simply rely on a straightforward arrangement when just a little extra spark can add a lot more. Brief songs like "Old Birds in the Seas" and "Country Crowded Trees" are further winners.
