iTunes Editors’ Notes

Isaac Hayes was a major figure in soul music throughout the ‘60s. He was serving as a writer, producer, arranger, and musician on a major amount of the work coming out of the Memphis-based Stax Records label when he stepped out on his own and transformed the world of soul music for the early ‘70s. Black Moses was a double album that gave Hayes the perfect platform for his extended "raps" and his ambitious arranging skills. Settling on an excellent set of covers, from Burt Bacharach and Hal David's  "(They Long to Be) Close to You" (a hit for the Carpenters) and "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" to Curtis Mayfield's "Man's Temptation" and "Need to Belong to Someone" to Kris Kristofferson's "For the Good Times," Hayes brought deep brooding melancholy vocals, deeply dramatic strings and a light, sleek groove to every style of song imaginable, recasting each song as a Hayes original. He toyed with his image as a late night Lothario, making sensual passes with hints of humor balancing out the grand gestures.

A true classic

One of the best albums of all times - no more needs to be said. If you don't listen to this album you will miss out on a true piece of art. Oh, and for all you Portishead and Tricky fans out there, the ORIGINAL instrumentation that you hear sampled on Portishead's "Glory Box" and Tricky's "Hell is Around the Corner" is on Ike's Rap II / Help Me Love (Track 9).

You can't lose by purchasing this classic piece of work!!!

I do not get tired of listening to this music at all. . .just sheer talent in taking songs like "Going in Circles," and "Never Can Say Goodbye"--and making them his very own. Kinda makes you forget who else recorded the tunes! This piece of work gives me the deer-in-headlights effect---I don't wanna speak to anyone while playing this music. Very hypnotic!

Still a classic...

So many years after its release, this album remains a definitive work in the classic R&B/Soul realm. I lived in Memphis when "Black Moses" was released, and a Hayes staffer gave me a promo copy. I began listening to it immediately and have continued to appreciate it after all these years. Ike puts it on the line on this one...don't miss it if you're a fan.

Few figures exerted greater influence over the music of the 1960s and 1970s than Isaac Hayes; after laying the groundwork for the Memphis soul sound through his work with Stax-Volt Records, Hayes began a highly successful solo career...
