Who knew that punk and jazz were such good friends?

When I found this, it was described somewhere as a blend of jazz and punk. That's an apt description. Some of the softer tracks emphasize the jazz more - "Nico" comes to mind - but others have a lot of punky thrash to them while still maintaining the freedom, swinginess, and instrumentation of jazz, such as "Iggy" and "Ludwig van Ramone". All of the tracks are worth it - download this album.

Taboo discovery

(Preview tracks 3, 4, 6, 8 & 10 while reading if you would ... )

I am typically one to frown on people saying "Oh you gotta hear this, its indescribable, will change your life mannnnnnn..." But when I put this album on I couldn't put into words my reaction. It was like I was back in early high school discovering the bands that made me fall in love and worship music all over again. I wanted immediately to broadcast these notes, loud as all hell, to those I know (or think) love & respect music. This is required listening for my drummer and whoever is playing guitar for us at the time.

It shouldn't even matter if this is jazz when it comes down to it. This is some amazing jazz if you put it in that genre, but thats only an aside. Good music is good music, nothing else. Simple in construction (mainly just 3 pieces at times) they are subtly intricate with their playing. All of them (sax player, drummer, and bassist) are amazing musicians individually, but as a band, they meet the definition of tight dead on.

The album is pretty close to perfect and typing that just now goes against what I would typically say and I already feel a little ashamed, but this band requires a little break from the norm. During my first session with this album I repeated 8 out of the 11 songs at least once after being stunned by some facet I heard within. Thats important to me; an album, well constructed & complete. Acoustic Ladyland just puts it together, flat out.

The other reviewer has it right; punk and jazz combining in a freakish orgy of what just sounds right, doing dirty nasty things with styles and sweaty notes. Things, that in the light of day, would never be allowed. The result: drums, bass and a singing sax that will keep playing in your head for days after hearing. Their music forces your brain's digestion of something superbly unheard of before and maybe even a little forbidden.

So now that I described the indescribable, like with moments of pure awe; impossible, dangerous, embarrassing, required, unavoidable, and important ... flirting with fluffy "oh my god oh my god this band is frickin amazing. Dude. Seriously" and simplistic raving ... no I am not proud of my actions, but this band needs to be heard, even if you just want to hear some new music that actually contains talent, Acoustic Ladyland has some weight to em.

Again, preview those tracks, buy those tracks ... you will want to buy this album and all others. Yes most.
Certainly. Adios

HEADBANG TO THE SAX!

A simply stunning album. It rocks harder than anything else as a sax tears through the most rocking album you will hear this year. It is awesome.

Biography

Formed: London, England

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The London-based Acoustic Ladyland formed in 2001 and released Camouflage in 2004, a primarily acoustic collection of jazz reworkings of Jimi Hendrix covers. Led by vocalist/saxophonist/arranger Pete Wareham (Polar Bear), the band eventually strayed from the classic rock trappings of its moniker with the following year's Last Chance Disco, a collection of originals that found the group breaking free from the more traditional aspects of the genre,...
