iTunes Review

Where Sleep Party People’s eponymous debut album found the Danish quintet teetering between Ulrich Schnauss-style nu-gazing and dreamy ambient electro in the spirit of Boards of Canada, its sophomore album plays with a haunting new depth. We Were Drifting on a Sad Song resonates with the eerie beauty of a David Lynch soundtrack. “A Dark God Hart” is the album’s stunning opener, where a slightly out-of-tune piano plays spare notes adjacent to ghostly, androgynous vocals. Gently sweeping string arrangements help set the tone with the elegance of old This Mortal Coil releases before a sonic tornado sweeps in near the song's end and carries it away. The title track bursts open with pulsing beats and throbbing guitar distortion that accompany the beautifully unsettling vocals; it resembles a long-lost Mercury Rev outtake played underwater. While both “Gazing at the Moon” and “Heaven Is Above Us” seem titled to dissuade critics from shoegazing comparisons, the former floats like Kevin Shields’ guitar tremolo and the latter is a gauzy piano dirge.
