Album Review

While it is a bit glossier than the group's debut, Somewhere More Familiar is an engaging record of polished jangle pop, highlighted by the group's harmonies and knack for ringing acoustic guitar riffs. The group's songwriting is a bit inconsistent, but when Sister Hazel do hit upon the right song — such as "All for You" — the results are exceedingly pleasant.

Great CD Great Performers

this cd is great. it is full of songs that are great to make good memories to and drown in your sorrow to. i love it!

I just saw them in concert w/ edwin mccain and ingram hill! the lead singer is truly funny and he entertained us all thru the night! I LOVE THERE SONGS, and the electric and bass players really ripped it up! the sound was awesome and now i am a true fan of sister hazel!

The Birth of Something Very Special

I love SH, but this disc suffers from a search for identity that only seems to be clearly visited on 'All For You', the song that sold the CD. You can hear the struggle to transition from a live club and college dance band to a mature studio entity. And oh, how that chemistry grows with each CD after this one. Still, the pieces are all here. I would very much like to see a remix done. The group played and sang with power, but the production left that "over the top" kick on the studio floor. A hotter mix would bring this album to life. Still, the writing is interesting, and the vocals and musicianship are very good. What makes 'All For You' a standout on the CD is exactly what travelled with them to 'Fortress' and 'Chasing Daylight', and is at last perfected on 'Absolutely'. If you love these later CDs then you'll like this one. If you like the later CDs, this one probably won't do much for you. Remember though, everyone has to start somewhere-- look where it has led them. To true mastery.

Combining elements of acoustic rock, folk, and jangle pop, Sister Hazel formed in 1993 in Gainesville, Florida.
