iTunes Review

A film-noir vibe tingles through the neo-soul of Nick Waterhouse’s sophomore album, Holly, felt both in the music's ominous undercurrents and the lyrics' jittery tone. The singer/songwriter’s native Southern California exerts a subtle influence on his tunes, suggesting both vintage Hollywood swank and the shadowy alleys of Raymond Chandler. Waterhouse’s tense, dry vocal delivery and his reverb-drenched guitar playing lend definition to his work, as even oblique lyrics seem like urgent confessions. The furtive scenarios running through tracks like “Dead Room,” “Sleeping Pills," and “Hands on the Clock” are framed by arrangements that reconfigure ’60-era R&B and garage rock sounds in ways that are both inviting and disquieting. The surf guitar–style licks of “It No. 3” and the simmering swing tempo of “Ain’t There Something Money Can’t Buy” show his ability to sustain a party groove while keeping the mood decidedly dark. Whether he’s slinking to a Cuban beat (“High Tiding”) or stepping high to Mexicali brass (the title tune), Waterhouse never loses his hipster panache.

Waterhouse - Umm, YES!

Nicky brings it back to the table as if he never left. The teasers available now (2.23.2014) are indicative that when the whole LP comes out, the vacuum created in our desire for more in the aftermath of 2012's Time's All Gone will be filled. Waterhouse continues to engage our desire to hear good, edgy pop with echoes of the best of the 60s R&B tracks. Timeless? I dunno. Addictive? Maybe. Worth $9.99? Absolutely!
