iTunes Review

Going into her seventh album, Sia Furler wanted to try “an experiment.” She would record self-written tracks already pitched to but rejected by A-listers. “I feel like they’re hits, but nobody wanted them,” she said. She was right. This Is Acting dives headfirst into pop’s waters but its bold and beguiling songs retrain their author’s earthy edge. Sia’s cathartic voice is, as usual, the star—“Alive” and “House on Fire” pulverize all before it, big-night-out anthem “Cheap Thrills” is a ton of fun, and “Reaper” (a Kanye West co-write) is the sort of midtempo empowerment jam only she can nail so triumphantly.

I miss the old Sia, but I enjoyed this album

I agree really with both sides on this. Sia always conveys her emotion clearly, if not through her lyrics, then through her voice. However, I feel like the more albums she makes, the more concealed that raw passionate feeling is becoming.

During the days when I felt alone and depressed, I sang and listened to "Breathe Me" and on the days when I felt hopeless, I did the same with "Soon We'll Be Found" and "I'm In Here". I wish I could do the same for "Elastic Heart" and "Alive", but I can't.

I do understand that she has changed up her style a bit to appeal to a broader demographic, but I hope Sia can return somewhat to her roots.

Craziest voice ever. Loving the new tunes. Whoever she worked with for this project really pushed her vocally. Can’t wait for the rest of the album.

Wait a second...

Did they mix up the original Cheap Thrills with the one with Sean Paul? Cause this one deserves to be in the top 5. She slays on her own.

In a career filled with ups and downs, Sia Furler has been an in-demand guest vocalist; a quirky singer/songwriter; a hitmaker for the likes of Rihanna and Beyoncé; and more popular than ever as an artist in her own right in the 2010s. Although raised in Australia, Furler rose to fame after moving to the U.K., where she worked as a guest vocalist for several groups -- including the electronica duo Zero 7 -- and released her own solo albums. Born in 1975, she first performed on the Adelaide jazz circuit...
