Album Review

For the third installment in Bungie's blockbuster Halo series, composers Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori offer up a whole new world of themes, while still maintaining the orchestral, modern rock foundation of the first two volumes. This time around, the beloved "Master Chief" has been replaced by a ragtag crew of "ODST" (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers), and while the objective remains the same (kill or avoid the "Covenant"), the action takes place primarily among humans, and as the player navigates the streets of occupied "New Mombasa," moody strings, jazzy piano, and even saxophone provide accompaniment. As the action ramps up, so does the music (the back end of Halo 3: ODST will feel more familiar to fans than the front), but it's the early moments that set this collection of video game music apart. One doesn't require knowledge of the game to enjoy the score, as it's got an atmosphere all its own.

Martin O'Donnell is to games as John Williams is to movies

At a time when many game companies are just signing licensed artists' songs for their game soundtracks *cough* EA *cough*, a few dare to create their own music for their game. Most times, however, these compositions end up being generic feeling and do nothing to add to the experience the game provides its player with. Why is this so often the case? Think about it. In almost every one of cinema's greatest masterpieces lie beautiful soundtracks that add so much to their respective films, that simply humming a few notes from them remind us of them. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Superman, Batman, Back to the Future... try singing the first couple of notes to any fellow movie lover and they will almost always instantly recognize what movie they are from. But this is true with games, too. The list is much shorter, but try singing the first few notes to the level 1 theme of Super Mario Bros. and anyone who considers themselves a fan of video games will recognize it. However, as game technology has progressed and game soundtracks have gone from beeps and buzzing to full orchestral arrangement, we haven't had too many of the latter that was instantly recognizeable... until the Halo series. Martin O'Donnell & Michael Salvatori's Halo Monk Choir theme has become one of those songs; one that ALL gamers instantly recognize from the Halo series, and that is a testament to their amazing talent. This soundtrack is a result of Bungie's passion for its flagship series. Halo 3's music is by far the finest I've ever heard in any game. Not only does the music really add to the game when playing, but it stands on its own. Within the track list lies a song that will draw out every emotion one can feel when hearing a true masterpiece. Inspiring, moving, epic, powerful, heartbreaking. Simply brilliant.

Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori strike again

There is not one word alone to describe the masterful work on these albums. Right now, i'm listening to 'Never Forget' and i'm just at a loss for words. I recently got Halo 3, and within a few hours of buying the game, I had gone up to my computer to find out the release date of the soundtrack. This is a must-buy for everyone, even those who do not own the game. I highly reccomend it to everyone, especially because of the nice balance between ballad and rock. Martin and Michael, Kudos to you, an amazing job well done!!!! 10/5 stars!!!!

Excellent

This album is an excellent compilation of Halo 3 music. The order the songs appear adds to the feel. Some songs like "Behold a Pale Horse" and "One Final Effort" stand out from the rest.
