American Psycho

American Psycho

After a protracted legal battle with former partner Glenn Danzig, founding bassist Jerry Only was awarded the rights to the Misfits name and image, thereby enabling him to restart the long-dormant band under his own auspices. Under Only’s direction, the “comeback” album American Psycho remains faithful to the original band’s blueprint. “Abominable Dr. Phibes” and “Crimson Ghost” continues the tradition of B-movie tribute, while the title song has all the anthemic “whoa whoas” that a rabid fan could ever want. Replacement vocalist Michale Graves hails from the band’s hometown of Lodi, New Jersey, which helps him to blend in seamlessly with the spirit of the band. He contributes roughly half of the album’s songs, including the originals “Speak of the Devil” and “This Island Earth,” both of which sound like vintage Misfits gems. As a vocalist Graves is no match for Danzig’s immortal bellow, but his versatility and charisma help to make American Psycho a vital album, rather than simply a nostalgic rehash of ‘80s hardcore.
