iTunes Editors’ Notes

Norwegian singer/songwriter Thomas Dybdahl has made a serious impression in the U.K., where the NME once called him “Norway’s answer to Nick Drake.” That high praise should alert fans of moody, introspective folk and pop that Dybdahl is a major talent worth hearing, though Dybdahl is clearly much more extroverted than Drake and shows a definite love of R&B and funk on his latest album. What’s Left Is Forever was recorded in Los Angeles and Norway with four-time GRAMMY® winner Larry Klein producing and Tchad Blake mixing the sessions, which included drummer Jay Bellerose, keyboardist Jamie Muhoberac, bassist David Pilch, guitarist Dean Parks, and strings from Vince Mendoza (Joni Mitchell, Björk). “Easy Tiger” snags the opening chords of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” before finding its own soulful path. Ambitious percussion guides the glorious falsetto of “This Love Is Here to Stay.” “Soulsister” mines earthy R&B. “Man on a Wire” bounces with a contemporary pop sound that’s purely 2014. “City Lights” nails a nocturnal Curtis Mayfield–style groove. “So Long” continues the breathy intimacy that should remind fans of Dybdahl’s earlier work.
