Album Review

Maroon 5 have certainly come a long way since their days in the indie outfit Kara's Flowers. After the band's demise in 1999, frontman Adam Levine surrounded himself with New York City's urban hip-hop culture and found a new musical calling. Maroon 5 was born and their debut album, Songs About Jane, illustrates an impressive rebirth. It's groovy in spots, offering bluesy funk on "Shiver" and a catchy, soulful disposition on "Harder to Breathe." "Must Get Out" slows things down with its dreamy lyrical story, and Levine is a vocal dead ringer for Men at Work's Colin Hay. Don't wince — it works brilliantly. Songs About Jane is love-drunk on what makes Maroon 5 tick as a band. They're not as glossy as the Phantom Planet darlings; they've got grit and a sexy strut, personally and musically. It's much too slick to cross over commercially in 2002, but it's good enough for the pop kids to take notice.

Amazing Album.

Maroon 5 is an amazing band, and this is an amazing album. I highly recommend the songs, "The Sun" and "Must Get Out," although the whole album is amazing. 1. Harder to Breathe - Very catchy. Great lyrics as well. 5/5 2. This Love - This song became a little over-played, but nevertheless, it's still great. It's the song that made me check out M5's album. 5/5 3. Shiver - Great song, awesome lyrics. 4/5 4. She Will Be Loved - One of my favorites. I love the lyrics, the music is amazing; it's an all-around superb song. 5/5 5. Tangled - Extremely catchy and thought-provoking. 4/5 6. The Sun - One of my all-time favorite songs. Wonderful rhythm, amazing lyrics...this song rocks! 5/5 7. Must Get Out - Possibly my all-time favorite M5 song. The lyrics are sweet, the music is as well...I just can't say enough about this song. 5/5 8. Sunday Morning - Also another one of my favorites. This song was pretty popular, too. 5/5 9. Secret - It has a long instrumental opening, but it's still a great song. 3/5 10. Through With You - The whole song is awesome, but the chorus really gets to me...in a good way. 5/5 11. Not Coming Home - It's a live performance, but I really love this song. Love the chorus, love the music...amazing song. 5/5 12. Sweetest Goodbye - Great way to end the album. This song is spectacular. It can make you cry if you're having one of those days... 5/5 I highly recommend this album.

Hard to believe this album came out almost five years ago

I remember when I first got this album awhile after it came out, sometime before Maroon 5 exploded and became one of the biggest bands around. This was actually the first CD that I bought, and it remains one of my favorites. Maroon 5 does here what few artists do successfully, which is blend multiple different sounds and styles to create something unique and well-crafted, in this case, soul, funk, pop, and rock can all be found on Songs About Jane. In addition to that, the band's songwriting and Adam Levine's amazing voice add extra strength to the album. I would put down the 'key tracks' on the album, but now that I think about it, there's not a bad song on this album.

Songs About Jane

I found this CD to be full of longevity. When I finished with This Love, I moved on to She Will Be Loved...then I moved to others, extended a couple of years until I got to Sweetest Goodbye (which, turns out, ended up being my favorite song). If you love an interesting mixture of genres melded into a CD of funk perfection, then this is for you. If you like all of this and longevity, then you are in for a treat.

A mix of polished pop/rock and neo-soul made Maroon 5 one of the most popular bands of the new millennium, with songs like "This Love," "She Will Be Loved," and "Makes Me Wonder" all topping the charts worldwide. Previously, bandmates Adam Levine (vocals/guitar), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards), Mickey Madden (bass), and Ryan Dusick (drums) had spent the latter half of the '90s playing in Kara's Flowers, even releasing a debut album for Reprise Records while still attending high school. The record tanked,...
