iTunes Review

An R&B icon from Cincinnati, Ronald Isley has been putting out records since the late '50s, starting as a founding member of The Isley Brothers. After dozens of albums and countless classic singles throughout the '60s, '70s, and '80s, he's spent much of his later career working with other acts, lending his golden pipes to hook-savvy rappers like Snoop and Warren G, as well as working with artists as disparate as Rod Stewart and R. Kelly. Since the turn of the millennium, he's been extremely busy—suffering a stroke, getting married, having a baby, and serving a prison bid for tax evasion. But he's also found time to release three great solo albums: Here I Am (a collaboration with Burt Bacharach), Mr. I, and this one. Though he's now older than 70, This Song Is for You proves that Isley hasn't lost a step musically. He amazingly sounds as good as ever. He shares mic time with youngsters KEM and Trey Songz on "My Favorite Things" and "Lay You Down," respectively. But for the most part it's all about Mr. Biggs, his untouchable voice, and love jams galore. Everything on here is fantastic.

The longtime lead vocalist for the Isley Brothers, Ronald Isley helmed the influential family group for over half a century, a period spanning not only multiple generations of siblings but also massive cultural shifts that heralded their music's transformation from gritty R&B to Motown soul to blistering funk.
