Album Review

Give Hanson credit for making a second album (not counting live affairs, demo collections, and holiday records) that virtually ignores the teen-pop boom they kick-started in 1997 with their debut album, Middle of Nowhere. This Time Around doesn't ditch the musical principles laid out on Middle of Nowhere — it expands them. Hanson winds up synthesizing its influences — still primarily classic pop tunes from the late '60s and early '70s, staples of oldies radio — into a bright, melodic sound of its own. Problem is, you can occasionally hear them working at it. Much of This Time Around feels like a conscious attempt at furthering their craft, defining their sound, and honing their songwriting skills. It's a stab at maturity. Not only are the performances measured and the production restrained, but the album features cameos by virtuosos like John Popper and Jonny Lang, just to prove that Hanson can hang with the big boys. They can, but so what? Jams and instrumental interludes are not the reason to listen to Hanson, records that sparkle with effervescent melodies and joyous hooks is. They haven't lost these gifts, even if the tempered production and overly earnest perf``ormances occasionally make the band's classicist instincts sound stuffy. There's something to be said for self-conscious maturity; by carefully watching over every aspect of the album's creation, Hanson and producer Stephen Lironi wind up with a record that is better paced and more consistent than the debut. It's hard not to miss the thrilling way Middle of Nowhere leapt out of the speakers upon its first spin with giddy fun, yet with its carefully considered craft and warmly ingratiating pop songs This Time Around is winning entertainment.

Can't Stop Hanson

I'll admit, I fell in love with Hanson as soon as I saw "MmmBop" on MTV; however, this album I believe this is some of their best work ever, and it just happens to be my own personal favorite. For those who never cared much for their initial realease, Middle of Nowhere, this sophomore release surely can be mistaken easily for a new upcoming band with its newer sound, catchy hooks, & wonderful lyrics. Fun, smart & more rock-ish, it is truly a tragedy that these boys are still categorized among all the sound-alike boy bands and pop stars that cease to go away. Among my favorite songs are "You Never Know," "Can't Stop," "Love Song," "In the City" & "A Song to Sing"...but who am I kidding? They're all great! If you'd prefer a more mature sound, try their 'Underneath' album. They truly are an evolving band...and as far as I'm concerned, a true musical artist isn't worth listening to unless their sound evolves & they sound the very same in concert as they do on the disk. ^_

A Favorite Album

I love this album! While I am not a huge fan of some of their other albums/songs, this is a wonderful addition to my CD collection! I love tracks #2 and #4 the best. And to those Hanson fans out there....yes, yes, I DO like MmmBop, so don't get offended! ;-)

Amazing Music by Incredible Musicians

The title clearly states how I feel about this album. It is my favorite by far. I was 13 when this album was released. I bought this CD with my money I received from completing Junior High. For my 14th birthday, which came a few months after this album was released I went to see them in concert for their "This Time Around Tour 2000" and it was an incredible show. The album is not just more mature sounding but the lyrics are beautiful written. I have always been a Hanson fan (Fanson) and continue to be at the age of 20. I pretty much grew up listening to these guys. Present day, they are still writing and playing their own music. This album is a great one and definately one for everyone to enjoy. If you haven't heard it yet, I'd recommend listening.

Formed: 1992 in Tulsa, OK

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Sounding like a revamped Jackson 5 for the '90s, Hanson came storming out of Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1997, blessed with photogenic looks and a surprisingly infectious sense of melody. Hanson had a sunny pop sense that stood in direct contrast to the gloomy grunge that had dominated the first half of the '90s, yet they also arrived with hip credentials -- a handful of the cuts on their debut were produced by the Dust Brothers (Beastie Boys, Beck, Sukia), and the rest were produced by Steve Lironi, who...
