Album Review

Judging an artist on the basis of what hit the top of the charts can occasionally be a risky business, since it's not always true that the best material is the most popular. In the case of Conway Twitty, however, it's an excellent criteria, since over the course of nearly 30 years, the great majority of his singles did indeed reach the top of the chart, so winnowing down his catalog to just number one singles still gives an excellent overview of the scope and quality of Twitty's music, even if it leaves behind such classic sides as "I Wonder What She'll Think About Me Leaving," which peaked at a mere four. In fact, even though MCA Nashville/Decca's double-disc collection The #1 Hits Collection has 33 tracks, it doesn't even have all of his number one hits, largely because it cuts off in 1981, the last year he recorded for MCA, so even though this is quite extensive, it doesn't even have all of his chart-toppers! That said, it does have all the number ones from his late-'60s/'70s peak, when he was produced by Owen Bradley and dominated the country charts with his lush romantic ballads and duets with Loretta Lynn, four of which are included here. Yes, 1994's four-disc box set The Conway Twitty Collection fills in some gaps this leaves behind, but those are minor. All the major hits and songs are here, providing both an excellent summary and introduction to this country giant.

Customer Reviews

If you do not like Conway, why would you waste your time even writing a review???? If he bugs you so much go find something else to do and leave the ones that LOVE him alone!! He was a great singer and performer. His songs are timeless!!!

Conway, Conway, Conway

I was raised on Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn and all the other great classics and he truly is an amazing singer. I think this is a great collection of his work, although personal favorites might have been left out. But for me "Hello Darlin'" will always top the list. If you're into old time country, this is definitely a place to look.

Amazing singer!

If you don't like country .. don't listen to it. BUT if you do then this is an amazing cd. I didn't buy this one but have bought many like it. I was raised on Conway and many others. He is one of my all time favorites. If all you are going to do is insult an awesome singer then don't bother thats not a review. I have many faves by him so its hard to pick just one song.

Originally a '50s rock & roll singer, Conway Twitty became the reigning country superstar of the '70s and '80s, racking up a record 40 number one hits over the course of two decades. With his deep, resonant down-home voice, Twitty was one of the smoothest balladeers to work in Nashville during the country-pop era, but he was also one of the most adventurous. More than any other singer, he was responsible for selling country as an "adult" music, slipping sexually suggestive lyrics into his lush productions,...
