Editors’ Notes

Joe Pug can mesmerize with just his voice, words, and an acoustic guitar, which he more than proved on his 2010 debut, Messenger. That release was moving and deep, and The Great Despiser is equally so. Examining universal themes through the eyes of relatable characters grappling with life’s ups and downs, Pug’s songs can be heartbreaking, soothing, and illuminating at once. With a subtle band that supports the songs without overwhelming them, the fuller sound sets this release apart from Messenger and Pug's two EPs. Fingerpicked stunners like “Hymn #76” and “One of Many” run alongside songs sweetened by bass and a tasteful electric guitar, with drums kicking in on the folk rockers “Stronger Than the World,” “Neither Do I Need a Witness,” and the title track. Yet whatever the arrangement, Pug's rich voice and graceful lyrics stay at the album's center. Each of these 11 thoughtful, unsentimental songs can hit you where you live.

So Good!!! Defintely buy this album

I've been a fan of Joe Pug since he dropped out of college and started writing music. This album has changed my life, every song is over whelmingly good. If you're looking for a real artist you have got to buy this album. You would never regret this purchase. The only thing I would recommend is buying the hard copy at your local music store so you can have the artwork in your hands!!!!! GENIUS!!!!

Hymn 76 is the best song ever written

I adore Joe Pug. I admit, the first time I listened to the Great Despiser, I was surprised. It is definitely different than his older stuff. But give it a couple of listens, and you won't be able to stop hitting replay. Some of his best songs are on this album. Hymn 76 is really amazing. I love that so many of his songs aren't literal, so I can interpret them as I want. I hope Joe keeps making music forever - can't get enough!

Proceed with caution

Didn't like it love the old stuff,I'll continue to support joe no matter what.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A singer/songwriter whose songs offer an updated version of the country-folk archetypes that Bob Dylan and John Prine made famous, Joe Pug was born and raised in Maryland, and began playing guitar when he was in grade school. Pug formed his first band on a dare from his sixth-grade science teacher, who didn't believe Pug and his friends would be able to pull something together in time to appear at a school dance. The boys were able to deliver a presentable version of a tune from the first Foo Fighters...
