iTunes Review

Lush arrived seemingly out of nowhere with the release of 1989’s Scar on the prestigious London-based 4AD label. The precocious female-led foursome quickly drew the ire of their peers, who resented their apparently immediate success. In reality, Lush were an old band going through a rapid change. Imbued with traces of The Smiths and Gun Club, “Baby Talk” and “Bitter” reveal their general post-punk roots, but Lush were already moving into brighter and more original territories. “Thoughtforms” and “Scarlet” were the earliest signs of the eerie, airy sound that would make them famous.

Shimmering Brilliance!

First off, the fact that this is now available is amazing. This is a long out-of-print EP on 4AD that came out prior to "Gala" (the EP collection). Though all these songs here are on Gala, to hear them as they were intended in the EP length, just shows the brilliant melodies, harmonies and songwriting that Lush expressed. Find yourselves lucky if you have never gotten into Lush before, THIS is where to start. The "Ciao" collection is a great place as well, since none of the full releases seem to be available yet as I write this, but it started around here. Etheriel Bliss!

Shoegazer Greatness

I'm amazed that this is available on iTunes considering that Gala isn't. If you haven't heard much of Lush, I recommend this unless you can gind Gala and Spooky on a back shelf of the local record store. Lush, in my opinion, was one of the best bands to come of the Shoegazers of the early 90s. They might be second only to My Bloody Valentine and only by virtue of how amazing 'Valentine's Loveless album was. I recommend this.... in fact I highly recommend this. Increase your rock IQ by giving this a listen.

Holds up so many years with a driven wall of sound and trance lyrical style. In today's world Autolux and Asiobi Seksu try to satisfy as completely as LUSH but fall slightly short.

Formed: October, 1988 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '10s

Meshing dreamy, effects-drenched guitars with airy, catchy melodies, Lush were one of the most prominent shoegaze/dream pop bands of the early '90s. Led by guitarists Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, the British band gained a cult following within the British and American undergrounds with its first EPs, yet the group never quite attained the critical respect given to its peers My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Even so, Lush lasted longer than any other of their contemporaries (with the exception of the...
