iTunes Editors’ Notes

The trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas has led a variety of bands, which have specialized in any of a number of styles: classical, Balkan music, classic jazz, and other genres. His group Brass Ecstasy has the sort of instrumentation you’d hear in a traditional brass band, but the quintet has its own modern sound. The group consists of Douglas, Vincent Chancey on French horn, trombonist Luis Bonilla, Marcus Rojas on tuba, and drummer Nasheet Waits. 2011’s Greenleaf Portable Series, Volume 1: Rare Metals, a digital-only release on Douglas’ Greenleaf Music label, has an appealingly casual vibe. It kicks off with “Town Hall,” which has touches of Kurt Weill, New Orleans, blues, and a whole lot more in an arrangement that keeps shifting gears but still hangs together nicely. “Night Growl” has a late-night, sassy quality that evokes Charlie Mingus’s combination of elegance and raunch. A striking take of Billy Strayhorn’s great ballad “Lush Life” is probably unlike any version you’ve heard before. “My Old Sign” closes the album on a quiet — well, quiet for a brass band — note.
