Not Essential Springsteen

I love Bruce Springsteen's music but this collection doesn't do his career justice. This album may feature 18 of his highest charting singles but does not have his best songs or any true fan favorites; and at the end of the day, it's an artist's most passionate, best work that becomes rememebered best. This could be an enjoyable album for an audience weened on adult contemporary music. But Springsteen's essential work has imense amounts of passion and energy, perfect for perofrming live. If you want to get introduced to the wonders Bruce Springsteen has to offer, buy his two greatest albums, 1975's Born To Run and 1978's Darkness on the Edge of Town. Or if you're interested in buying a "Best Of" collection get The Essential Bruce Springsteen.

this turned me into a springsteen fan

This is the PERFECT introduction if you want to really "get into" Bruce Springsteen, it should be called Bruce 101. It was the first step in my journey from an absolute newbie into a diehard who eventually bought most of his albums & DVDs and attends his concerts. If you're new to Bruce and are considering this versus The Essential Bruce Springsteen, DEFINITELY pick this one. The Essential is way too long, cut and dry. It tries to get ALL his hits from beginning to end. And it's 3 discs, which means you'll most likely be too overwhelmed and frustrated to bother listenining to all of it. Besides, there are so many "hits" on it that it leaves no incentive to buy his albums, which are INCREDIBLE. Greatest Hits, however, is 1 disc long, just over an hour, can easily be listened to in one sitting. The tracks FLOW really well from one to the next, like an album should. Track selection was very effective: they picked songs that a newbie would like right away, and also made me want to go deeper (i.e. buy the albums).

Good, but not the greatest!

If you want the best, start with Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ, then turn up The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, put Born to Run in your car player with the windows down and the sound up high and then get a case of beer, go home, draw the shades and put on Darkness on the Edge of Town, Candy's room and Racing in the streets are two that will make you think and drink...the man has a way to bring you to the edge with emotion, one of the best American Song writers
