Too good to be true

Like the old saying goes, when something seems too good to be true, it probably is. I'll admit that I should have been tipped off by the phrase "Re-Recorded." Many of these cuts sound like more recent renditions of classic tunes by older rockers past their edge. Some sound like older, less competent studio recordings. Maybe demos, maybe early takes, we don't know. Other cuts are obscure (and sometimes incompetent) concert recordings. So, if you're looking to save a little cash and pick up a boat-load of classics by the original artists, this album might be a disappointment. There's even one cut that's mislabeled. The Commander Cody cut titled "Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar" isn't.
On the other hand, if you're a collector who enjoys going deep, there are some interesting gems among the detritus. Pete Rivera does a raw, personal and credible job covering his Rare Earth hits. I think I might like Thelma Houston's recording of "Don't Leave Me This Way" better than the more highly produced original. Her vocals are cleaner here. I definitely like "Ooh, Baby, Baby" by the Miracles more than the original. Mitch Ryder's "Jenny Take a Ride" is a solid recording (not something I can say about the "Devil With a Blue Dress" cut on this compilation). I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the playful Iggy Pop rendition of "Louie, Louie." I also like some of the raw MC5 proto-punk cuts. I'd like to think they were Tyner cuts but there's just no information available here (anyone?).
It makes me feel better about my $6 to think that re-recording some of these cuts gave the artists we love the chance for a do-over, a chance to boost the vocals or drop the producer's hooks and gimmicks. The fact is, if you like two or three cuts, it's hard not to justify the other three or four dollars it'd take to complete the album.
