Album Review

This low-fi punk-pop band offers some nice moments on this disc, particularly on the ersatz Motown of "Dificient Love" and the straight-ahead punch of "Skinny Wolves," but the lack of finesse in guitarist David Christian's style gets a bit wearing after a while.

The Best CD of 1999

1999 was probably the best-ever year for indie pop, seeing the releases of CDs that remain career highpoints by My Favorite, Of Montreal, and Dressy Bessy, among others. Almost a decade later Comet Gain’s Tigertown Pictures still strikes me as the best record of its genre’s best year. If you’re not sure about this record, listen to the sample of “Hate Soul” and decide from there, but please do not let the weirdly lukewarm reviews you occasionally see posted places dissuade you. The things that make this record difficult for some listeners are the very things that make it so successful and so important. Comet Gain is avowedly political, deeply engaged in conversation with both high and low culture, and constantly challenging the listener to embrace and enjoy the least accessible and most subversive featuers of both commercial and non-commercial music (much as, you might argue, Godard or Warhol did with film in the 1960s). In fifty years your grandchildren will have to study this record in college, and they’ll think less of you because you didn’t start listening to it sooner.

The first edition of Comet Gain was formed in 1992; Feck initially conceived the group as a trio with bassist George Wright and drummer Phil Sutton, but the band truly found its sound the following year, when Jax Coombes replaced Wright on bass...
