Album Review

Guitarist Kyle Asche, a new name in jazz at the time of this recording, plays straight-ahead music in the vein of Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, and Wes Montgomery. Featured in a trio/quartet with organist Pete Benson, drummer Tony Howell, and (on four of the eight selections) tenor saxophonist Scott Burns, Asche takes excellent modern mainstream solos. The quartet, despite the lack of name recognition, swings hard and with soul on the two standards and Asche's six basic originals. All of these young musicians display potential for the future and The Hook Up is well worth exploring.

Music anyone can really enjoy

I really enjoy listening to this album. I like to listen to music that can put you in a relaxed and laid back mood. Kyle Asche does a great job doing that and you will appreciate and understand what I mean If you take the time to listen to it. I have heard him play live at a restaurant and is always a pleasure to hear him.

A great disc... looking forward to the next one!

This is a fantastic debut from a guitarist that I heard at the Green Mill jazz club while visiting Chicago. It was his playing that night (which was informed by some of my favorites: Grant Green, Wes, Kenny Burrell and others) that made me download this.... and I'm happy to report that it lives up to my expectations. His understated guitar playing burns cool and slow. Think: The oppostie of Jimmy Bruno. Asche's originals are just that. Not your stereotypical rip-offs of blue note classics from Jimmy Smith or Larry Young that can dominate new organ trio releases. Catch him in Chicago if you can and buy the record!!!
