Editors’ Notes

Flawless harmonies, great songs, and crisp production were the secrets to The Everly Brothers’ chart-topping success. The sibling duo’s unique fusion of old-time country and beat-driven rock ‘n’ roll can be heard on The Fabulous Style…, a 1960 compilation of their Cadence recordings that includes key singles and prime album cuts. Phil and Don’s uncanny vocal blend gives these tracks a sparkle that hasn’t dimmed with the decades. Exceptional songwriters like Felice and Boudleaux Bryant supplemented the Everlys’ own tunes with songs that addressed the lives of American teenagers with sympathy and humor. Signature tracks like “Let It Be Me,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” and “When Will I Be Loved” testify to the duo’s high artistic standards. Feisty covers of “Be Bop A-Lula” and “Rip It Up” show off their rockabilly side; “Like Strangers” and “Take a Message to Mary” find them adding folk and Latin accents to their ballads. While The Fabulous Style… doesn’t include all of the brothers’ initial hits, it is a balanced showcase of what Phil and Don did best at the start of their long and influential careers.

What's Going On Here!!!

To let everyone know, this is not the actual tracklist for this album. Some of the songs are just exact repeats from their self-titled album, also here on iTunes (which is also missing a song - "Hey, Doll Baby" from its tracklist). With some crafty playing around, you can piece together the original tracklist from this album and The Everly Brothers' Best (found here on iTunes with only one error) to form the original tracklist. I'm only giving it two stars because of the extra work I had to do to sequence this album. The quality is incredible though.

Clean Lyrics?

It was a close call on this CD, Don Everly really wanted this album to use explicit lyrics. The original lyrics of "Til I Kissed You" originally contained 46 profanities and was the 1950's equivalent to Guns N' Roses "Get In The Ring." The world will never know how vicious this album could have been. It worked out, but not very well. Sure it's a classic, but not nearly as classic as it should have been. Don Everly was still drinking and it was some far-out meanness. Cruel and Neat. Barry O.

The Everly Brothers were not only among the most important and best early rock & roll stars, but also among the most influential rockers of any era. They set unmatched standards for close, two-part harmonies and infused early rock & roll with some of the best elements of country and pop music. Their legacy was and is felt enormously in all rock acts that employ harmonies as prime features, from the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel...
