Album Review

Smooth jazz stalwarts the Rippingtons infuse their trademark brand of instrumental pop with a Latin aesthetic on Wild Card. Once again featuring the lead guitar of Russ Freeman, the Rippingtons deliver a solid collection of mellow contemporary pop and lite jazz that should please longtime fans. Evenly split between R&B-inflected cuts such as the Aretha Franklin hit "Till You Come Back to Me" and Latin tracks including the flamenco-inspired "Spanish Girl" and the salsa-ready "Mulata di Mi Amor," Wild Card is a pleasant listen.

Give this a listen! I'm a hard rocker at heart. So what am I listening to this for?! Because it's that good. Do yourself a favor. Download the song "Paradise", and I think this one song will blow you away and win you over. Kinda Joe Satriani-ish in a way. Beautiful song. Great arrangements - and Russ Freeman on guitar kicks booty. Enjoy!

Another Freeman Masterpiece

Russ Freeman has to be one of the great musical genius's of our time. The fantastic textures he layers into his music have been there since the first Rip's album (and his solo stuff). Wild Card adds to that collection of the great versatility the Rip's are known for. One detractor is "Till You Come Back to Me", any "smooth jazz" vocal on Rip's albums take away from the richness and greatness of the instrumentals. Highly recommend "Wild Card" and all the rest of the Rip's albums (rip Mr. 3 right after Wild Card).

Once again, I'm blown away by The Rippingtons! Amazing is not even close to what i would describe this CD!!! Several of these tracks including Paradise, Spanish Girl, and Moonlight are airing on The Weather Channel this month (March 2007). My favorite would have to be Paradise, because the song truely is paradise!! Its so laid back yet jazzy. Its a fun tune to have stuck in your head! :-)

One of the most popular groups in what is loosely termed "contemporary jazz," the Rippingtons were formed (and have been led ever since) by guitarist/keyboardist Russ Freeman (no relation to the veteran West Coast bop pianist of the same name). Freeman (born February 11, 1960, in Nashville) studied at Cal Arts and UCLA, and recorded Nocturnal Playground as a leader in 1985 for the Brainchild label, a one-man project. In 1987, he was approached to record for the Japanese Alfa label and came up with...
