Album Review

By 1997, there's nothing really new to the Galactic Cowboys' brand of progressive metal — rich harmony vocals layered over bluesy, sun-baked psychedelic guitar riffing, plus intellectual, often bizarre lyrics. A distinct note of bitterness about the band's lack of success and anger with the music industry has crept into many of the songs, some ("Tomorrow") more overt than others. The songwriting is still pretty strong, and the group's fans will find this another enjoyable release.

GC does wonderfully with an alt-metal approach

This album has a flavor not quite like any other GC album. Well worth the purchase. There is some straightforward metal in the title track and a few others, but the bluesy and harmonic blend of metal and alternative is the treasure of this album. Oregon, Ribbon, Mona Lisa, and My Life are four of GC's best songs from ANY of their albums, and Ribbon is probably somewhere in GC's top five overall. Honorable mentions go to Evil Twin, Breakthrough, Media Slant, and Trip On Love, but seriously, there is nary a dud on this entire record and it astounds me to this day that this album didn't "break through" on the alternative scene.

"All Music Guide"

Clearly doesn't get it..... GC was such a great band who wrote great music, I'd recommend getting all of GC's recordings, They really were an original and genuine sounding band who clearly played their music with heart and integrity. All Music Guide knows nothing.

Absolutely brilliant songwriting

Not gonna say too much other than just listen to songs like "Tilt-A-Whirl", "Evil Twin" and "Trip On Love" and you'll see how creative and fun these guys really are. "Media Slant" is absolutely hysterical. The 'boys are heavy and clever all at the same time, not the same old brain dead HM sludge that gets cranked out by too many others. Who says it couldn't be done?

Formed: 1989

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Bassist Monty Colvin and drummer Alan Doss first played together in Houston in a band called the Awful Truth. When it split up, Colvin and Doss recruited vocalist Ben Huggins and guitarist Dane Sonnier to form Galactic Cowboys. Signed soon after by DGC, the metallic rock combo released a self-titled debut in 1991 and Space in Your Face two years later. Following the release of Space in Your Face, the group was dropped by DGC and Wally Farkas replaced Sonnier (who formed the Sonnier Brothers Band)....
