EDITORS’ NOTES

The Cookers are an electrifying ensemble of seven legendary jazz veterans with unmistakable chemistry: trumpeters Eddie Henderson and David Weiss, pianist George Cables, bassist Cecil McBee, drummer Billy Hart, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, and tenor saxophonist Billy Harper. Their fourth full-length, Time and Time Again, is filled with peerless musicianship that’s both elegant and incandescent. The opener, “Sir Galahad,” is a thunderous rerecording of Harper’s 1973 classic, while “Double or Nothing” teems with remarkable interplay and a series of thrilling trumpet solos. Elsewhere, the nocturnal movements of the late highlight “Dance of the Invisible Nymph” are haunting in their restraint.

Inspired

gb3k,

One of my favorite albums of all time is Wayne Shorter's Schizophrenia. The Cooker's arrangements are clearly inspired by those lush harmonies with just enough dissonance to keep it very interesting. Playing is very inspired and exciting.

Cables

Das Boone,

George Cables remains one of finest of all time. What can you say about the Cookers - If you don't like this, then you you don't like JAZZ - past, present or future.

About The Cookers

Jazz supergroup the Cookers feature a handful of journeyman musicians who play passionate, high-energy post-bop in the tradition of such groups as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Horace Silver's '60s ensembles. Formed in 2007, the group originally included saxophonists Billy Harper and Craig Handy, trumpeters Eddie Henderson and David Weiss, pianist George Cables, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Billy Hart. The Cookers have released several albums, including Warriors (2010), Cast the First Stone (2010), and Believe (2012). In 2014, the group returned with its fourth studio album, Time & Time Again, which featured new member Donald Harrison on saxophone. Two years later, they delivered The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart. ~ Matt Collar
