iTunes Review

This British folksinger from the tiny fishing village of Burnham-on-Crouch in Essex, issued a debut album, Clocktower Park, in 2003 that received little notice but did nothing to stop Walsh from continuing her pursuit with a MySpace page and the support of producer Tim Bidwell, whose “house” served as her second album’s recording studio and album title. Bidwell keeps things simple, understanding that Walsh’s pure voice is what draws people in. Primarily, this is acoustic guitar and voice, with melodies that float above the standard progressions and underline Walsh’s deep, emotional commitment, as “Your Song” (no relation to the Elton John tune), “Talk of the Town,” “Don’t Break My Heart” and “Tonight” are straight from the heart pleas that nearly every young songwriter attempts, but few pull off with such poise and natural beauty. Strings appear in occasional doses (“Betty”). “Bury My Head” double-tracks her vocals for a sweet, dreamlike swirl that reaches to falsetto for its vulnerable spots. “French Song” uses a small band ensemble for an extra rhythmic bump. Tim’s House is a collection of little moments that expand with repeated listening.

That one word about sums up all of Kate's music. I bought the album because Itunes recommended it (I'm such a music junkie) and found it surprisingly wonderful. Goldfish, Your Song, French Song, Fireworks and Talk of the Town are my favorites on this album. There's a delicate strength and honesty that shines through Kate's lyrics and gentle voice. I play this album CONSTANTLY.

absolutely delicious...

I listened to this album sitting on my back porch with my feet propped up on the railing watching the sun rise over the lake while enjoying a fresh hot cup of coffee. Not really, but that's the image that came to mind when I first heard Kate. If you happen to enjoy Mindy Smith, don't hesitate on this one.

As Heard on MySpace Music

I was fortunate to come across Miss Kate while exploring the MySpace Music site in early January 2007. Indeed, her site was top of the list in the folk genre and I simply had to click and find out more. Thank goodness I did, as Kate's beautifully vulnerable voice on "Your Song" sent shivers up and down my spine! I knew then her songwriting and voice are up there with the likes of Sarah McLachlan and Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays. That rare ability to convey what she's feeling behind the lyrics. Luckily, her MySpace tracks (Your Song, Talk of the Town, French Song and Don't Break My Heart) were downloadable. Erm, probably much to chagrin of Kate. Anyhow, I have them in iTunes titled "The MySpace Sessions EP". I love "Tim's House" and the additional recordings are wonderful, wistful and full of wishing. Although I do have to say the MySpace recordings are more intimate due to their very simple vocals and guitar arrangement. Hmm, perhaps these can be additional bonus tracks iTunes can add? If you like the feeling of shivers down your spine, then don't hesitate to purchase and download the album now.
