The solo debut from Alexandre Pires, lead vocalist for Brazil's Só Pra Contrariar, is an impeccably produced collection of power ballads delivered in a sensual croon. Singing in Spanish instead of Portuguese, Pires invests his lyrics with bucketfuls of emotion, resulting in powerful singalong anthems like "Aqui Nada Es Igual," "Usted Se Me Llevo la Vida," and "Necesidad." Though there's nothing here as catchy and infectious as Só Pra Contrariar's "Santo Santo," Pires appears quite ready to take his place in a long line of Latin heartthrobs from Julio Iglesias to Ricky Martin.

Brazilian Alexandre Pires (born Alexandre Pires do Nascimento) started his professional career in the late '80s when he joined a local band called Só Pra Contrariar. The group made a self-titled debut album, released in 1993, and they became a top-selling act in 1997 while climbing charts with "Depois do Prazer" and "Mineirinho."
