Album Review

This Concord Puente date offers a frenetic mix of furious Latin jazz and danceable cuts, among them "Vaya Puente" and "Master Timbalero," as well as the more ambitious "Nostalgia In Times Square" and "Espresso Por Favor." Puente not only plays vibes, marimba, timbales and percussion, but drives a band that has three sterling rhythmic contributors in Johnny Rodriquez, Jose Madera and Jose Rodriguez, as well as superior saxophonists Mario Rivera and Bobby Porcelli, and capable pianist Sonny Bravo. The band plays straight dance music, intricate bop or big band swing. The ageless Puente continues issuing versatile, first-rate sessions, and this disc adds another chapter to his remarkable legacy.

Tito Puente

Simply one of the finest latin jazz albums of all time and long-time personal favorite of mine in this genre. The "Mambo King" Puente is at his very best here and, along with his once-in-a-lifetime assemblage of masterful improvisational musicians, delivers a memorable masterpiece that once heard cannot be forgotten. Each and every track moves along at its own pace with near perfect timing and alluringly unmatchable jazz-influenced conga, horn, string and drum rhythms. "Flight to Jordan", "In a Heartbeat", "Thunderbird" and "Tigimo + 2" are, in my opinion, absolute classics performed by one of Latin music's undisputed masters. Needless to say, I highly recommend this album!

By virtue of his warm, flamboyant stage manner, longevity, constant touring, and appearances in the mass media, Tito Puente is probably the most beloved symbol of Latin jazz. But more than that, Puente managed to keep his music remarkably fresh over the decades; as a timbales virtuoso, he combined mastery over every rhythmic nuance with old-fashioned showmanship -- watching his eyes bug out when taking a dynamic solo was one of the great treats for Latin jazz fans. A trained musician, he was also...
