Album Review

Vintage organ, horns, and funk backbeats give this Malian husband and wife's second U.S. release a different feel than their stateside debut. Still, it's Amadou's slithering guitar leads and Mariam's soaring voice that all but steal the show from the couple's wildly talented band. This is a world music album in the most expansive of senses, proving just how easily a soulful combination of rhythm and notes can communicate across such meager divides as culture, politics, blindness, and language. Highly recommended.

It's Like That (C'est comme ca)

Amadou & Mariam have so much to offer it is hard to find the words, so stop and listen to these songs; Beki Miri for a Jethro Tull-like ride africa style or Bali Maou for an infectious Stevie Wonder-esque sound. Or C'est comme ca for a roots reggae groove. Top to bottom this CD gives the listener what they want for their money, mainly MUSIC. Amadou Bagayoko's musical genius does not stop here try listening to the new release - Dimanche a Bamako or Je Pense A Toi. You won't be disappointed.

Amadou et Mariam: Tje Ni Mousso

These guys are really worth seeing live. I saw them with their large band at the Edmonton Folk Festival in a natural amphitheater. They started with an extended version of Chantez-Chantez, which comes out with a La Grange type rhythm and builds and builds like rolling thunder. Bali Maou has a totally unique syncopated back-and-forth finger pick style that just gets people tapping and dancing, and the percussion gets more and more rowdy with steel drums coming in towards the end, but still maintaining that solid back-and-forth rhythm. I would love to hear more music like Bali Maou.

A musical husband-and-wife duo that got its start in Mali, Amadou & Mariam met in 1975 at Mali's Bamako Institute for the Young Blind. Amadou (born Amadou Bagayoko in Bamako in October of 1954) began his musical career in 1968, and by 1974 had joined Les Ambassadeurs du Motel, a leading group (which counted Salif Keita as a member) in his home country. He wound up at the aforementioned institute after becoming blind as a teenager through a congenital cataract. His future wife, Mariam Doumbia (born...
