An Acquired Taste

The main thing you should note is that at the end of Big Bad John, this album has the censored line, "At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man. Big John." This was a pretty big letdown, in my opinion, as this seems cheesier than the original, "At the bottom of this mine lies one hell of a man. Big John." As you can see, we've come a long way in the censorship battle, but this is still disappointing, as I'm sure this track is one of the main reasons people buy this album.

DIDYA NOTICE THE RE-RECORDINGS?

While the other reviewers rave about Jimmy Dean, all I could notice was that THESE ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS! Please don't buy these K-Tel redone remakes when the original versions [on the Columbia/Sony label] are also available on itunes!

Jimmy Dean was a big big man...

So how come these cheap re-recordings of his hits make him seem so small? There's another greatest hits CD of his available in the Music Store, with the original (and in the case of "Big Bad John", uncensored) versions of his great songs. That one is by Sony. This is by K-Tel. The difference between Sony and K-Tel is the difference between night and day. Avoid K-Tel.

Dean was born near Plainview, TX in 1928 and grew up poor, often working on farms as a boy to help make ends meet. His mother taught him piano starting at age ten, and he went on to pick up guitar, harmonica, and accordion....
