Album Review

For much of the early 21st century, six-string shred king Vinnie Moore focused primarily on serving as a replacement for Michael Schenker in UFO (issuing several albums). But as a result, his solo career suffered, as only a single solo studio release materialized (2001's Defying Gravity). That all changed, however, in 2009, with the arrival of his seventh solo album overall, To the Core. Not as over-the-top as his earlier solo outings, Moore now focuses on the importance of creating guitar-driven melodies (and sounding like a not-so-far distant cousin of Joe Satriani). In fact, in quite a few instances, Moore seems more concerned with creative a strong and sturdy groove ("Transcendence") rather than just soloing the night away. Elsewhere, you'll find the Saga-esque album opener, "Fly," the bluesy "Jigsaw," and the hard-rocking "Into the Open." As a result, Vinnie Moore can now be referred to as a "restrained shredder."

Great Music

I have all of Vinnie's CD's and I have to say that this is simply the best one! Great mix of songs/styles that are enjoyable to listen too.

I've been a fan of Vinnie's since Mind's Eye and he has always been one of my favorite guitarists. His new album, To The Core, has to be one of the greatest guitar instrumental albums I've even heard. Superb musicianship from everyone. Vinnie rips as usual and Van Romaine lays down amazing grooves, also as usual. That's enough from me, buy this album now and let Vinnie show you how it's done.

Great work from a great guitar player.

This guy is definitely worthy. He's been honing his craft for years and is well known amongst the who's who of players (even if not so well known in the main stream). If you're interested in instrumental rock-focused arrangements (not to be confused with prog rock/metal), I highly recommend this album, possibly moreso than any of his other work; not because it's the flashiest (by a long shot, it's some of his most melodic and restrained work), but because it shows a talented player that has sought to evolve, and done so. Bravo, Vinnie. I would like to see something a little more ambitious and theme oriented, which is the only reason for the four (not five) stars.
