iTunes Review

The title track to this debut by Seattle’s Hey Marseilles quickly points to the band’s readymade audience: fans of the Decemberists or Villagers will waste no time getting out their muddy, hobnailed boots to kick up a little floor dust doing the indie-shuffle version of a two-step. With sweet and swaggering violins and cellos, perky accordian and rollicking piano, this seven-piece outfit makes music fit for a soundtrack to a summer’s day in the country. When they slow the tempo down and shift to minor keys, To Travels & Trunks makes even more sense with a hot toddy in front of a winter fire. Songs like “You Will Do For Now” and “Someone to Love,” stripped down to their naked, acoustic core, and rousing stompers like “Hold the Morning” and “Rio” embody the stylistic bookends of To Travels. In between, the band’s artful blend of orchestral pop and organic folk, dressed with Matt Bishop’s warm vocals, is richly rewarding.

Customer Reviews

This is a very, very good album, with two songs that are all-time greats: "Rio," which is fun and catchy with great lyrics, and the beautiful "Calabasas," which slowly builds towards a musical epiphany that I'm happy to listen to over and over again. This group really deserves to make it big, and I hope to keep on following them for years to come.

A Sweetly Solid Album

To Travels and Trunk is a very melodic album with a lot of unique instrumentation. Some of the songs are infectiously happy (Rio, Marseilles) and some are bittersweet and beautiful (You Will Do For Now, Someone to Love). It lags a tad on the back half of the album as some of the songs are similar, but that is balanced by the loveliness of said songs. All in all, it is a very pleasing debut that holds up to repeated listens.

I love this album. Love it.

Formed in 2006 by vocalist Nick Ward and guitarist Matt Bishop, Hey Marseilles quickly expanded into an eclectic six-piece band. The group took root in Seattle, where Ward and Bishop were attending the University of Washington. Ward's roommate, pianist/accordionist Philip Kobernik, was the first to join the core duo, and Hey Marseilles' lineup soon swelled with the addition of cellist Samuel Anderson, violist Jacob Anderson, and drummer Colin Richey. Released in December 2008, To Travels & Trunks...
