Album Review

Where Greatest Hits had the bulk of Tom T. Hall's greatest story songs, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 concentrates on his silly, cutesy songs, like "Sneaky Snake," "I Like Beer," "I Love," and "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine," among seven others. For fans of his detailed narratives, these songs can be quite grating, but for listeners that want all of these hits in one package, Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 functions quite nicely.

Craft Of Songwriting

Along with Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, This collection represents some of the best songwriting ever. Tom T. specializes in telling stories (Ravishing Ruby, Old Dogs, Children, and Watermellon Wine) but waxes philosophically (Deal) and is not above the broad sweep of celebration (Country Is, I Love, I Like Beer) in this grouping of songs. The children's songs are very cute. A few more words about Ravishing Ruby: great arrangement, especially the mariachi band. In this song it's as much what Hall leaves out as what he puts in lyrically that makes the song so compelling; you get caught up in the mystery of who Ruby is.

I Love - This Album

This album brings back so many memories of living on the farm with my family in Indiana. It reminds me of the sounds of crickets at nights, a cool evening summer breeze, this song playing on the stereo of my Dad's old pickup truck, and my family just being together enjoying a beautiful country evening. I miss those days. I was about 5 yrs old when my Dad first played "Sneaky Snake" for me. It was my favorite song at that time. Tom T. Hall's music is what country living is all about.
