iTunes Review

Noah & The Whale have long been labeled folk-pop, but for record number three, the "folk" part of that tag is best retired. Gone are the harmonium and ukulele, and in their place we find crisp synth notes and percussion that snaps with authority. Even the piano seems more commanding, almost strident. If the synths throw N&TW fans off at first, we advise you to hang in there. The breezy, Tom Petty–esque feel of many of these upbeat tunes are in a completely different direction from the melancholy of The First Days of Spring and NATW's organically hewn debut, Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, and it's well worth getting lost in. Main guy Charlie Fink still sings as if he's thinking out loud—just throwing stuff out there in a half-shouty, half-resigned kind of way—but clearly there's been a breakthrough after the misery of Spring. Last Night inhales with a more hopeful outlook and exhales with a dismissive brush-off of the wrongs of the past. "L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N." and "Tonight's the Kind of Night" burst with optimism and are ridiculously upbeat, sing-along tunes. Let Last Night lift you up.

I'm a hardcore NATW fan. I could listen to their other albums over and over again. This one....not at all. I think there are two songs that I actually like. The rest have this really gross 80's whininess to them. They lost the folk style undertones that made me fall in love with NATW in the first place. Thanks but no thanks on this one.

Last Night on Earth

Its classic like tom petty, dark like lou reed, expansive like animal collective, listenable like phoenix- creating a sound familiar without being trite.
Highlights- Wild Thing, Old Joy

Noah and the Whale does it again

Some bands always sound the same - not Noah and the Whale. Great band. Great album. It's different than their previous albums, but it's a good kind of different.

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Noah and the Whale became a leading light in the British folk scene with the release of 2008's Peaceful, the World Lays Me Down, their popular debut that cracked the U.K. Top Ten and spawned the hit single "5 Years Time." Formed in the southern suburbs of London, the band also attracted attention by serving as a launching pad for Laura Marling, who left the lineup to 2008 to launch an award-winning solo career. Noah and the Whale forged ahead in her absence, releasing albums that moved away from...
