Editors’ Notes

Following the chamber-folk elegance of The Acoustic Sessions and the quirky, Tropicalia-tinged La Carotte Bleue, Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl expand their approach on the visceral, rock-oriented Midnight Sun without simplifying anything. They take the serpentine melodies and sophisticated song structures they'd already established as their signature and frame them with a mixture of mind-bending, '60s-flavored psychedelia, epic '70s art rock, and something timeless and indefinable that places the blend solidly in the present day. The album introduces itself with the burly guitar riffs, edge-of-madness keyboards, and otherworldly vocals of "Too Deep" before segueing into the even trippier "Xanadu," as Lennon and Muhl's voices weave into and around each other. Lennon's well-known love for obscure psych records makes it likely that the cover of '40s tune "Golden Earrings" was inspired by a version by the '60s band Gandalf. A psychedelic vibe runs throughout the album, but Midnight Sun still shines with a fresh kind of light.

Psychedelic Rock is Back!

I am just so floored by this album. Midnight Sun is the best thing that Sean Lennon has come up with so far...

I have been wondering when Sean Lennon would finally fall into the mainstream?

For close to 20 years now, Lennon has been writing, playing, producing, experimenting and shooting up the veins of indie rock/pop music. But unless you're in the 'know,' the eyes of the majority - Lennon is just another hohum BeatleSon who will be compared and crushed into the ground. How many Beatle Freaks show up at Lennon's concerts and look dismayed that he's doing different? A lot. There are a lot of them. And Lennon has embraced this - let them be dismayed. And for the most part, the Beatle Freaks have run away - holding their ears - he sure doesn't sound like John. But that's where it gets fun.

Sean is by far are more talented musician than his Dad. Sure, he hasn't written "Imagine," and he doesn't plan to. What he does is groove, he rocks, he rolls and he is not afraid to shoot off into space and discover alien territories.

But goddamn if it isn't so much fun to listen to...

With his beautiful musical and vocal dynamo and better-half, Charlotte Kemp Muhl - the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger is no longer an unknown treat for just the unapologetic audiophiles.

Midnight Sun is going to break them far and wide - which is kind of sad...for those of us who have followed Lennon since his first album...he's the secret that we can no longer quietly share.

Let's just hope the exploration doesn't stop from here...

I love these crazy kids

I’ll be honest and admit I prefer the sound of their previous ‘acoustic’ album. However, I have many white hairs and so I know the kids of today will prefer this dreamy murky sonic stroll. The album comes into focus track after track and will offers its rewards in repeat listens. Way to go Sean and Charlotte! Keep up the great work!

Amazing

This sounds like it will be much better than the previous work. Very eastern/70's/psychedelic/futuristic is the way I'd describe it. Amazing vocals, hamonies, and complex interlaced sounds. I cannot wait for this.

Biography

Formed: 2008 in New York, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '10s

Turning their romantic partnership into a creative one, Sean Lennon (son of the late John Lennon and Yoko Ono) and Charlotte Kemp Muhl formed the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (often shortened to GOASST) in 2008. In the spirit of the psychedelia that influenced their sounds, the multi-instrumentalist pair freely bring in pieces from all over the musical map to create their blissfully melodic musical explorations. The band made their debut in 2010 with a pair of releases, a poppy, Brazilian-influenced...
