iTunes Editors’ Notes

Stevie Wonder wrote in a new musical language with 1972's masterful Talking Book. Yet, he did not settle for that album's personal accomplishments, but pushed himself to write even more challenging songs. He had an impeccable touch with a love song, but the ’70s brought social consciousness to the fore. The tight funk of "Too High" is the sound of the dreams of the ’60s pulling back to the societal realities. Drugs, urban turmoil, class disparity, crises in spirit, and politics weigh on Wonder's mind. He never loses himself to apathy or bitterness, preferring to find a beautiful escape in the glorious tonal clusters of "Visions," the raw excitement underpinning the classic "Living For The City" and the levitating groove of "Higher Ground" that would inspire a generation of musicians and fans to the passions of funk. "He's Misstra Know-It-All" addresses President Richard Nixon and the collapse of faith in the American political system for a new generation. However, Wonder finds soulful calm within "Jesus Children of America." A career highpoint in a career marked with many peaks.

Innervisions

I am floored to find that this masterpiece album has no prior reviews. I feel like I am painting on fresh canvas. Most ba-boomers should be able to mentally just drop the needle on this album and play side 1 and then 2 in their heads. Yes, it sticks with you over the years--there is hope, pain, melody, and the great Stevie Wonder mix when one song ends and propels you to another song through his visions. It is a Crafted Album, not just a collection of songs. I remember getting married in the 70s and having Golden Lady on the playlist for the reception because all could enjoy it. Listen to the opening coolness of Too High, the push of Higher Ground and the sheer joy of Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing. When an absolute master as Stevie wonder calls the misic his "innervisions" you know you are in for an aural treat. Perhaps I am giddy at being the first review, but I invite others to listen and share this music and your thoughts.

Stevie Wonder is a much-beloved American icon and an indisputable genius not only of R&B but popular music in general. Blind virtually since birth, Wonder's heightened awareness of sound helped him create vibrant, colorful music teeming with life and ambition. Nearly everything he recorded bore the stamp of his sunny, joyous positivity; even when he addressed serious racial, social, and spiritual issues (which he did quite often in his prime), or sang about heartbreak and romantic uncertainty,...
