iTunes Review

Peter Beckett and Ronn Moss—the founding members of Player, which had a 1977 hit with "Baby Come Back"—have been plenty busy over the years. Beckett continued songwriting; he had pieces covered by Janet Jackson and composed film scores and music for The Bold and the Beautiful, a soap opera that for 25 years featured Moss as Ridge Forrester. Moss left that role to focus on this reunion. Here, Player's music picks up in the late '80s, with a tight AOR sound that brings back memories of power ballads, tailored guitars and keyboards, and meticulously arranged background choirs. "I Will," "The Sins of Yesterday," and "You're My Addiction" have the sound of perfectly executed pop songs with a hard rock sway. In a sense, the album is a bit like modern country-rock, but without the overstated country element; in its place is a style that recalls The Eagles' rock 'n' roll side. Acoustic guitars meet shimmering electric guitars and airtight harmonies. There's even an updated acoustic version of "Baby Come Back."

Crowley. After adding drummer John Friesen, Player signed to impresario Robert Stigwood's RSO label and issued "Baby Come Back," which sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in early 1978. Their self-titled debut LP appeared that same year, as did the follow-up, Danger...
