Album Review

Coming up with a fresh idea for a Christmas CD is a challenge to most bandleaders, but Tom Kubis had no trouble at all, even though this is his third holiday effort for Cexton. Instead of lukewarm renditions of a baker's dozen of the most popular carols, he offers a tantalizing mix of songs from several decades. The cooking "I've Got Christmas" is an uptempo opener that quotes numerous different compositions, with "Sleigh Ride" as its underlying theme. Listeners are likely to think of folksinger Burl Ives when they hear "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas," but Kubis' brisk arrangement updates the tune with fine solos by Jeff Bunnell on muted trumpet and baritone saxophonist Brian Williams. No composer credit is given for the gentle ballad "Toyland," which features a sensuous vocal by Carol Jolin and the leader's playful soprano sax. Guest Jack Sheldon is added for "Christmas Song" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," with his typically sly vocals and swinging trumpet. The only misfire is the overly slick "Do You Hear What I Hear," with a rather pedestrian arrangement and bland synthesizer detracting from Wayne Bergeron's warm trumpet solo.

Customer Reviews

The arranger's arranger!

This one of those special albums that take you down harmonic twists and turns that you don't expect, but really welcome. The musicianship is absolutely impeccable. Jack Sheldon is one of the best Hollywood session trumpeters around and really shines on this recording. If you want a hip Christmas, This is the album for you.
Cheers, Bob Rutkas
