iTunes Review

Phil Jones claims he'd been listing to Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes when inspiration for Tranquilizers took shape. But where in this drowsy, purple haze does one find those iconic R&B artists? Tranquilizers is a fine blend of shoegaze and chillwave; considering that Jones spent time in the chillwave poster band Washed Out, it’s pretty clear what his real natural habitat is. He shouldn’t run from the tag, as he’s darn good at it. Just check one of the most sublime transitional moments in the collection, when the track “Beauty Queen” (sounding like a super-mellow but insistent Jesus & Mary Chain) segues into the cracking snare and glittering guitars of “Tuesdays,” with Jones’ dead-inside vocals drowsily weaving in and out of the acoustic/electric guitar pattern. The circular pull of the vocal-free “There Was Time” lures listeners in gently. And again, the intertwining of two elements—simple bass and guitar—on “We” has a mesmerizing, casual way of nailing the door shut behind you. “Tranquilizers” may not be the most accurate word for these tracks, but it’s close.

The Cure in places. Joy Division in others. Siouxsie Sioux at the bottom of a swimming pool. A smoke filled room at the end of a long night. Atmospheric. 80s to 90s. Fill your headphones up with this and bliss out.

Hailing from Atlanta, Jones had used ambient samples and GarageBand beats for his 2008 Owls Eyes EP, prior to collaborating with Washed Out's Ernest Greene. Financed by the success of the Sub Pop release Within and Without, he stocked up on gear and returned to recording solo, taking a more melody-oriented approach for the material on his debut full-length,...
