Album Review

Quicksand forge out a dense, metallic grind that sounds like a more streamlined version of Fugazi. The band's debut, Slip, relies more on metal than punk, but that makes the music all the more effective — the group's attempts at punky fury simply aren't as strong as their brutal, gut-level heavy riff-rockers. Vocalist Walter Schreifels spews out enough angst-ridden lyrics, but what is important is how his voice fits into the dense wall of sound. Quicksand's music is about powerful anger, and the persistent, bludgeoning Slip delivers the goods.

Walter Schriefels makes my eardrums bleed with joy...

Seriously. A.) Gorilla Biscuits B.)Moondog C.)Quicksand D.) CIV This album is a serious stroke of genius. It was the perfect album when recorded and to this day is still one of the few albums i can listen to at any time or any place.

Maybe someday hell will freeze over for Quicksand as well

It still rips me that they called it quits for good...which leads me to this...going back on your word is not always a bad thing. Quicksand's "Slip" opened my mind and ears several years back when I was an isolated introvert growing up in secluded Western Nebraska. Believe it or not there are "folks" in those parts of the country who do have all their teeth, are educated in personal hygiene, crave experience, and seize the oppurtunity to get out and experience the world - versus the stereotypical country norm that much of us are associated with. My first taste of music like Quicksand and others led me to these forms of realization, enlightenment, and provoking ideas. I know you don't want to hear my life story, but I need to credit music from bands like these for inspiring and moving me. Hard, raw, original, and motivating. If you don't care for it the first time, just listen to it again and I promise it will grow on you...even today.

Great Album

I had this tape back in the early/mid 90's and loved it...then I lost the tape around '99. Just downloaded it today and this thing is even better! Slip has standed the test of time by containing zero gimmicky crap, it just keeps comming at you with powerful verses. This album flows great, and the simplicity is brilliant! If you do not want to jump around and scream listening to this, go download some Britney Spears!

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s

The alternative metal band Quicksand emerged from the New York City hardcore scene of the late '80s; before coming together in 1990, singer/guitarist Walter Schreifels, guitarist Tom Capone, bassist Sergio Vega, and drummer Alan Cage all honed their chops in a series of local acts, including Youth of Today, the Gorilla Biscuits, and Bold and Beyond. A self-titled EP soon followed, and in 1992, Quicksand issued their Polygram debut, Slip, earning airplay with the single "Dine Alone." After touring...
