This is by far one of my favorite CDs. Gil Shaham is a wonderful violinist, but this, in my eyes, is his best work. The violin has always been thought of as a "devil's instrument," which is why so many violinists have "devil" CDs out. This selection is excellent, and is filled with songs with a real history. For example, Giuseppe Tartini had a dream that the devil was perched at the foot of his bed playing the violin. Tartini said that when he woke up that he tried to copy the song he heard the devil play as best he could, but the true song was lost. What Tartini copied later became the "Devil's Trill" Sonata, which is found on this CD.
THis album is amazing...Gil Shaham is one of the best violinists out there right now an this cd proves it...everything single thing is perfect...he has the passion the intonation an it makes the cd extraordinary...my favorites are Devils Dance...Danse Macabre...and Obsession which is one of Ysaye's Sonatas...He has a beautiful take on this certain son and that it tops the list for me...THis album is awesome and you would be dumb not to at least buy one song.
Engaging Musicality with Phenomonal Technique
Gil Shaham is certainly one of the finer violinists traveling today. He continues to add layers to his already multidimensional tone. This collection of virtuoso showpieces reveals his uncanny ability to express the music. Only one drawback exists. Recorded sound cannot capture all of the beautiful nuances of Gil's tone that one would hear in the concert hall.
