Trauma

Trauma

On his seventh album, the Compton rapper/producer shares sharp, masterfully written tales of California living, interweaving themes of PTSD, paranoia, and partying, as on “Intro for Roger.” Slick internal rhymes, brilliant turns of phrase, and freaky funk grooves demand heavy head-bobbing on “Get Up” and “Get Down.” On “Pacific Coast Remix,” which samples the G-funk classic “California Love,” Quik’s bittersweet descriptions of his hometown are pure poetry: “Negativity hangs over the city like a puppet string, pulling you up.”
